How to stain 2 new coats tung oil finish on old mahogany table? Want more color – then poly. Sand down?
I removed old finish w/ Minwax antique refinisher, then applied 2 coats dull Formby’s tung oil finish. Ugh. Want more color and shine. Do I have to sand it down to add stain, then poly? Help!!!!!!!Thanks
If you’re wanting to apply polyurethane, get rid of that tung oil. If you have any refinisher left, a little should do the trick. Mahogany can be a difficult wood. For that reason, I don’t recommend traditional stain then polyurethane. Minwax sells a product called “polyshades” that is stain and polyurethane in one step. They have one called Bombay Mahogany that is a very rich dark red color. It’s available in satin and gloss. It’s not quite as durable as a traditional polyurethane top coat by itself. Therefore, if it is a table that will be susceptible to a lot of wear and tear, apply the polyshades, scuff lightly with 400 grit sandpaper after it dries for a day, then use polyurethane on top of that. Polyshades is a topcoat rather than a stain that sinks in. This method will be the easiest for you.
