What is the cost to have an electric guitar body painted one solid color? And a neck-through?
I’ve heard it can be rather expensive, and this raises questions as to the wisdom of restoring such an instrument.
I have the opportunity to buy a BC Rich Warlock, NJ Series for $150. The guitar is at least ten years old and looks every second of it (I deduced the age from the buckling on the plastic truss-rod cover, and the dubious state of the Floyd Rose). The body itself is not so gouged as to compromise the integrity of the wood, but cosmetically, the guitar needs serious attention.
I’ve heard that to have just the body redone would cost $300, twice what is likely the premium price of this guitar.
And how much more would it cost to paint a neck-through guitar? I once owned a US Custom Mockingbird, and have since wondered what restoration costs would be. This information would otherwise add me in making a reasonable offer on a guitar that needs to be refinished.
Its expensive. If you are just talking about refinishing the topcoat, its cheaper. However, the entire body needs to be sanded, then primed, then layered in multiple coats of paint followed by multiple coats of lacquer or nitrocellulose, then buffed out several times to get a mirror type finish. The guitar you have is not worth it for collectors purposes, and even if it was, guitars lose their value when they are refinished. A neck thru and blot on neck should be about the same to paint (price) depending on if the back of the neck is painted or not. The neck thru would probably be a little more if the neck is not painted, but a decent amount more if it needs paint/sanding. Honestly, it would be cheaper to just buy a Warlock body in good condition and tranfer your parts to it, or just get a whole other warlock.
If you want to do some cheap touch ups, and the color is not some wacky crazy thing, or a tie die finish, try bringing your guitar to the store and find a nail polish that is almost the same color. You can also use crazy glue to fill in some lacquer cracks. Just be careful with the stuff. Most little dings and stuff will only be noticable to you because you are 10 inches away from the guitar when playing it. But for people 10 feet away, they cant see it.
