Exploring Lanzarote – Natural Attractions
Lanzarote is a well known package holiday destination but this trend is changing now a growing number of independent tourists are starting to visit the island. Attracted by its great year round climate, breathtaking beaches and stunning surreal scenery Lanzarote boasts lots of natural wonders which were created during the 18th century by some seriously large scale volcanic activity.
Tourists have been flocking to the fourth largest of the Canary Islands ever since the package holiday industry first took off in the 1970´s. And Lanzarote continues to attract millions of visitors today. Many of whom like nothing more than basking in the sun, which shines all year round here. This prompts plenty of visitors away from their Lanzarote villas for a day or two to see what the island has to offer.
As well as great weather all year round visitors will also find that there is a lot to do and see on the island, which helps to contribute to Lanzarote´s popularity as a holiday destination. Such as the many creations of the local artist César Manrique – who developed visitor attractions such as the Cactus Garden and the Green Caves. Along with many natural wonders such as the Valley of 1000 Palms and the majestic sight of the Timanfaya Volcano Park.
With so much to do it can be hard to choose what to do or where to go, but many peoples lists include:
Rancho Texas, a little bit of the wild west in sunny Lanzarote. It is a bit short on cowboys and Indians but then the daily shows more than make up for this. The falconry display is simply stunning although it could be a little frightening for younger children when the larger birds of prey swoop down extremely close to the heads of the audience, and the crocodile display always thrills the crowd or maybe The Timanfaya National Park: Timanfaya is a site not to be missed and well worth a days break from lapping up the sunshine on one of Lanzarote’s excellent beaches. Scarred from extensive historic volcanic activity the barren landscape has an unnerving beauty all of its own. A display by the parks warden further demonstrates the power that lies dormant below this spectacular park
If the above recommendations don’t suit your style perhaps try The Cesar Manrique Foundation: This stunning landscaping feat was originally designed as Cesar Manrique’s own home. Manrique once again as in most of his work managed to take existing geology (in this case series of lava bubbles) and turn it into a truly world class piece of living architecture. Although his life was tragically cut short the foundation celebrates his positive impact and contribution to the island and if you have any interest in the Islands cultural, definitely a place to visit.
If your heading for the north of the island take the time to explore the majestic Valley of 1000 Palms. An oasis of Canarian palms created by villagers in Haria. Who have been planting a palm to mark the birth of every baby locally for centuries.
