Help! I am confused if I bought a apple from Joe and paid him$1.00 for it, and sold it to Bob for $1.50?
would I be earning a 331/3 % return on my investment? 1/3 of $1.50 is 50.cents right? the reason I ask is I answered a question on here, a young man was buying 7 oranges for $3.00 and wanted to know what he`d sell them for per hundred to earn a profit of 33 1/3% on his investment, so I divided $3.00 by 7 = 42.86 cents per orange, then x 100×42.86= $42.86 cost per hundred, $42.86×150=63.84 to earn 331/3% profit 63.84 subtract $42.86= $20.98 =1/3 of 63.84 for a return on his investment of 331/3% right? but the best answer chosen was sell them for $57.00 per hundred $42.86x 33.3%=$57.00 why? one 1/3 of $57.00 is only $14.27 profit, but one 1/3 of 63.84 is $20.98 who is right? the reason I ask is years ago I worked at a lumber yard and the owner had me take the cost of everything we bought and X`s it by 1.50 and told me we had to make a profit of 33% to stay in business and showed me that something that cost a dollar x`s 1.50 = is a 33% profit was we cheating the customers,

if you bought an apple for $1 and sold it for $1.5, you are earning a 50% return on your investment. if you are putting in 1 and getting out 1.5, you are adding .5 to 1. you find out what percent of $1 is 50 cents….50%.
If you want 33 1/3%, you divide the cost by 3 (or multiply by 1/3 or .33). Then you add that to your original cost and then you will have 133 1/3%, or a 33 1/3 % profit.
so if one orange costs 42.86 cents, you divide the cost by 3 (or multiply by 1/3 or .33) and you get 14.27 cents (this is your profit or the return on your investment). to find out the total amount of money youd be making, you add that to the original cost of 42.86 cents…you get 57.14 cents. multiply that by 100 to get the cost per hundred is about $57.
you arent trying to find 33% of 57, your tring to find a number that when 33% of the number is added to the original number you get 57
the equation is .33x+x=? where x is the cost of one orange
you are adding the profit (which is 33% of the original cost) to the original cost.
its basic cost/revenue/profit funtions learned in intermediate algebra, ill send you a link. 
it gets more complicated when you add a down payment like starting a business sort of thing
