I just bought a sword at an anime con while on vacation and I have no idea how to get it home on the plane?
Help.
It is a real sword with a real blade. Can I take it in checked luggage or will I have to ship it to myself?
You can declare the sword as checked baggage. You do not have to ship it separately. Here’s what to do.
Pack the sword in a special container. It may be long, but so what; you are declaring it as checked baggage…not as a handcarry, so it is not with you inside the passenger cabin, therefore negating the issue of it being a threat to anybody. It’s like when people are going hunting to another location, and they want to bring their own rifle. They pack them in special airline approved rifle cases, declare them, show that it is unloaded to the check in agent, sign the papers to acknowledge that it is unloaded (there is no ammunition in the chamber/receiver) and so forth. If people can fly with rifles, why not a sword? It’s done all the time.
As stated before, you must pack the sword in a firm hardsided container or a box filled with styrofoam for protection, so that the sword is protected from being bent. When you check in, you will have to ask the check in agent to place several labels of “FRAGILE” tags on the sides. This warns ramp agents to pay particular care with it, and they have an extra bin for that in the underbelly of the aircraft. At check in, If the sword/container is extra long, it will not be pushed down the conveyor belt. After attaching a baggage claim tag which indicates your destination city to the packaged sword, the airline staff will ask you to bring it to the TSA Oversized Luggage Screening checkpoint (if you’re in the USA), so be sure to give more time for your check in.
If TSA asks you what’s inside and they want you to open the package, be prepared to open it, so bring along extra packing tape (for re-packing). However, this is most unlikely to happen since they have x-ray machines for baggage in place. BTW, make sure you have your BAGGAGE CLAIM STUB with you, as this is your proof that you are the rightful owner when you claim it on the other end. After dropping the sword with TSA, you can then proceed to the Security Checkpoint and on to your assigned departure gate (which is actually stated on your boarding pass).
