Red Maple I just planted died and seems be to regrowing from the bottom and I want to save it.?
Last yr I planted a red maple and it died. I see shoots and leaves growing from the bottom, basically where the trunk meets the ground. The tree is small it’s about 5 feet tall and one inch thick. Can I cut the trunk off and save the growth that is alive?
If the main trunk is dead and root or stump sprouts are forming, there should be no problem removing the main trunk. Let the sprouts grow for a few months and remove all but the biggest one, which will develop into a new main trunk. If you don’t remove the smaller sprouts, it’ll grow into a multi-stemmed maple “bush” instead of a tree.
