How to get to Muir Woods National Park
Muir Woods National Park is located northwest of San Francisco Golden Gate Bridge. If you drive from San Francisco, you will need to go west on Lombard Street or highway 1 north, cross the Golden Gate Bridge. Take exist: California highway 1 direction Stinson Beach for about 8 miles. Don’t miss the Muir Woods highway as you approach Stinson Beach junction-stay on the right side going north on the Panoramic Highway for about 2 miles. At the next junction, take left driving on the scenic windy road for about 5 miles before you enter Muir Woods National Park.
Attention: Don’t rent a car or drive to Muir Woods during the peak season (May through October!) It’s a nightmare! Muir Woods National Park parking lot is extremely small and limited to commercial vehicles and bus tours! Most of visitors who drive to Muir Woods National Park during the peak season spend most of their time looking for a parking space! Muir Woods National Park Parking lot can roughly fit 50 cars! What to do with these hundred of cars that keep turning around looking for a place to park? They end up driving far south and parking along the narrow roadway and walking for long time before they get to the park! What a waste of time! Why wasting so much time when you can either take the local shuttle or choose a Muir Woods Tour. Sometime it’s more affordable hiring a tour guide with an SUV or Van saving time and money!
Muir Woods National Park has a lot to offer! The park is home to the Giant Redwoods! The coastal redwoods are the Giant & tall redwoods trees that grew within a narrow strip along California Coast. This strip is located along the Pacific Ocean that extends from south Oregon down to Big Sur in Central California.
The Coastal Redwoods are known for being the tallest trees on the surface of earth. Three redwoods trees would be as tall as the Eiffel Tower in Paris-France. In other words, redwoods can be as tall as 380 feet!
Muir Woods National Park is home to the coastal redwoods, they are not as tall and wide as the Giant Redwoods in Redwoods National Park (6 hours driving north of San Francisco). When you visit Muir Woods National Park, don’t miss two major groves: Cathedral Grove and Bohemian Grove. Both groves are home to the tallest, oldest and widest Redwoods in the Park! Many folks who are in hurry turn left on bridge three before they get to Cathedral Grove! Keep walking for few minutes passing bridge # 3 to picture the largest redwoods in Muir Woods National Park. If you have more time, you can keep walking further west to see more redwoods and groves. If you have the whole day and like taking a hike, take the Ocean View Hiking trail. The round trip can take 2 to 4 hours to enjoy it in depth.
