How can I create cool vector art in Illustrator?
Well, I’m quite good with photoshop and have made ‘vexels’ in photoshop – but these aren’t true vector images because when resized they lose quality.
So, I’m now trying to get to grips with Illustrator. I’ve used the pen tool in both Photoshop and Illustrator CS, but CS2 seems to be different. Before, I could adjust where each anchor point was, but now don’t seem to be able to do that.

I know it’s vector work and would probably involve some tracing of an original image…but where can I find some really good tutorials to help me do the swirly patterns (something I find really hard with the pen tool!) and foliage effect. I know how to vexel images, it’s the ‘different’ effects I want to get.
I’ve actually got a wacom tablet, but find a mouse easier…
Really I found photoshop and freehand limiting for vector art. As with any software and skill it takes time and practice.
I use illustrator cs2 professionally and find it excellant and I use a pen. For personal use with maori style art and design which is curved based and complex its great.
You are able to move and ajust each anchor point indidually but its different to photoshop in the way the tools are used. my partner also has issues using illustrator but mostly from lack of use and knowledge.
I cant actually use amouse at all very well now as I only use the pen with all applications with a dual monitor set up. There are some good tutorials online as well as books to help.
The first of those images is not difficult to recreate with time and plenty of use with layers. The smokey effect is at the base and would be best as an import from filter effect made in photoshop as the easiest and fastest option. The other is a standard layered vector graphic. For reference use a book like the adobe illustrator cs wow book is good as a tool.
