Cheap Garden Summerhouses Are Easy To Build Yourself
Garden summer houses are usually supplied as either ready-made or flat-pack for assembly on site. But this is much more expensive than doing it yourself, and gives you little choice for customizing the summerhouse to your own specification.
With a good set of plans to your exact layout and a comprehensive materials list you can make your own wonderful cheap garden summerhouse to enjoy and, by the way, add considerable value to your property.
There are a number of things to consider at the planning stage for a garden summer house:
Use. Will the summerhouse be just a storage shed for tools and gardening bits and pieces? An outside workplace? A children’s den? A place to relax, read, watch TV in the long summer evenings? The design of the summerhouse will evolve from these ideas. Whether or not to provide water or electricity supplies, perhaps solar heating, window dimensions, insulation – quite a lot to think about.
Dimensions. Deciding on the uses for the summerhouse will dictate the size you need. Many summerhouses are about 50 square feet in area but it is sensible to make it as large as possible. You can never have enough storage space in your garden.
Site. The summerhouse will need to be built on fairly flat land with good accessibility. Other issues might be privacy from neighbors, and a desired position close to or far away from your house. To some extent location, use and size are all inter-dependent and need careful thought before going any further. String and pegs can be used to mark out the footprint of the summerhouse, to get an idea of how it might look.
Aesthetic Considerations. Think about the visual impact of your garden summer house. Only you can be the judge, but try to see it against other items in the garden such as sheds, chicken coops, play areas and so on.
Regulations. Check local planning regulations to make sure that your planned garden summer house will be allowed or will need planning permission first. Don’t forget to follow the electrical code and your building regulations when making your summerhouse as well.
Base. A concrete base is the best idea for a large or medium sized garden summerhouse, but you could decide to fix the floor of the summerhouse to a grid of concrete posts set into the ground. Mounting the summerhouse above ground would avoid some site preparation work and would also allow better ventilation under its floor. It’s also a great place for hens to forage!
Materials. Western red cedar is the traditional material for summerhouses, because it looks great and termites hate it. Many people also use pressure-treated softwood. This has the advantage that you can paint it in your choice of color. Cedar shingles are a great idea for the roof. Bark is also a possibility, although it is difficult to find the right quality.
Plans. It is really important to use proper plans rather than your own drawings or sketches. A professional will do all the hard work for you, such as making a complete list of materials, and this will ensure you get everything right first time.
