We all remember that scene in the film Mommie Dearest screen legend Joan Crawford punishes her adopted daughter Christina because she had a dress hanging in the closet on a wire hanger instead of a wooden hanger. No! more! wire! hangers! ever!! she screamed at the girl and we all felt a chill at just how insane this woman may have been. Or was she? The fact of the matter is that there is a significant difference between using a wire hanger and a wooden hanger.
Obviously, a child shouldn’t be punished for hanging a dress on a wire hanger instead of a wooden hanger; but the truth is that a wooden hanger is a much better choice than a wire hanger because a wooden hanger is better for the clothing. A wooden hanger also does a better job of preventing wrinkles and a wooden hanger just generally keeps clothing looking nicer than a wire hanger ever could.

A wooden hanger will ensure that your clothing lasts significantly longer than if you use a wire hanger. This is important if your wardrobe includes fine articles of clothing.
The main and obvious reason for the difference between a wooden hanger and a wire hanger is one of structure. Wire hangers are pliable and will bend under the weight of the clothing they are holding. This is most readily observed with heavy coats and other such items, but even a light pair of trousers can cause a wire hanger to bend as well. A wooden hanger just will not do that under any circumstance.
Wire hangers became more widely used than wooden hangers primarily due to cost. This is the reason that professional cleaners tend to use wire hangers over a wooden hanger. Wire hangers are less expensive; however the cost savings does not translate over into the care of your clothing.
